Castroviejo takes Madrid opener; Bilbao strong

Jonathan Castroviejo of Movistar repeated last year's feat by winning today's Vuelta a Madrid opening-day time trial.

The powerful Getxo-native crushed the competition over 7,8 kilometres to finish 16 seconds ahead of Artem Ovechkin in second and 24 seconds ahead of Sergey Firsanov in third. None of the Euskaltel riders managed to mix it up, but Peio Bilbao and Pablo Urtasun weren't that far off in 20th and 23rd respectively.

Orbea's top finisher was again Illart Zuazubiskar. The man with the difficult name showed his potential in the discipline with a decent 24th-place finish.
